Jeffrey H. Orleans and Philip H. Goldstein Join Alden & Associates Team

Florence, MA, September 30, 2010. Alden & Associates. Inc., an intercollegiate athletics executive search and consulting services firm, announces the addition of Jeffrey H. Orleans, J.D., and Philip H. Goldstein to their team of experienced Associates. Both Jeff and Phil have many years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics. Their respective backgrounds will greatly enhance our work with Divisions II and III clients as well. Jeff brings an impressive background in college athletics having served as the Executive Director of the Council of Ivy Group Presidents, and thus as Commissioner of the Ivy League, for 25 years. Phil comes to Alden & Associates having served as a chief financial officer at a number of NCAA Division I programs.

Information About Jeff Orleans, Senior Associate

Jeff served as Executive Director of the Council of Ivy Group Presidents and Commissioner of the Ivy League from 1984 to 2009, following nine years as a Special Assistant to University of North Carolina President William Friday. In addition, he spent four years as a federal civil rights attorney, during which time he helped write the original regulation for Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. He has been active for many years in governance of the NCAA and in the Collegiate Commissioners Association as well as in the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), which named him a “Fellow” in 1999. Jeff’s recent projects have included work on financing college athletics with the Knight Foundation Commission, with the NCAA in making college athletics more environmentally sustainable, in strategic planning and gender equity with both conferences and institutions, and as a member of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Expert Panel on Student Risky Drinking. He speaks and writes frequently about athletic and other issues in higher education and is a past editor of the Journal of College and University Law. Jeff is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School and a former CORO Foundation (San Francisco) Fellow in Public Affairs.

Information About Phil Goldstein, Senior Associate

Having served as a staff member at five NCAA Division I athletics programs over his 29-year career, Phil’s expertise is fiscal and operational integrity in intercollegiate athletics. His specialties are budget management, long term financial planning and internal controls. His work has eliminated deficits, kept the budgets balanced and rectified audit issues at every institution at which he has worked.

He served as Special Assistant to the President for intercollegiate athletics at the University of Northern Colorado, which employed him to advise senior administration on financial issues related to their transition to Division I, to hire and train a business manager, to implement a new budget management system, and to assist in the preparation of a multi-year plan.

Phil began his athletics career at Bowling Green State University in 1983, where he advanced to Senior Associate Athletics Director and supervised Marketing, Tickets, Concessions, Sports Information and Equipment, along with the business office. He left BGSU in 1994 for four years at Eastern Michigan University followed by nine years at Colorado State University, both as Associate Athletics Director for Business, while also adding the supervision of Facilities & Events, Athletic Training, Strength & Conditioning, Legal, Personnel and numerous sports to his experience.

Phil is a graduate of West Virginia University, with Bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Sport Management. He served as a Graduate Assistant in the WVU Athletic Business Office for two years, while also working as a volunteer coach with Women’s Track & Field.
