Strategic Plans

Strategic planning is critical to the health of any organization. Knowing one's direction is a measure of health and commitment to the future of that organization. Athletic departments are no different in this than are Fortune 500 corporations.

As the CEO of your intercollegiate athletics program, it may be time for you to assess where your department currently stands in the institution, conference, and national athletics community. Are you clear on where you want your intercollegiate athletics program to be in the next five years? Does your staff understand this direction and have they had an opportunity to be a part of the planning for the future?

Good planning can be a "renaissance" experience for all involved, including the senior college or university administrators who will ultimately be involved in the planning and outcomes of the plan. It can bring a widely disparate group of employees together in ways that are productive and meaningful; creating a strategic plan can launch another "team" in your athletics program—your team.

The process generally is as follows:

  • Institution shares preliminary pertinent documents with Alden & Associates.
  • Our firm travels to institution to meet with senior administration, athletic administration, coaching staff, student-athlete leadership, and other constituent groups. We can at this point provide a PowerPoint presentation, which educates the staff regarding the strategic planning process and their involvement in the planning process.
  • An online survey is distributed to the internal departmental administration, staff, and student-athletes which covers their individual vision, plans, and "dreams" for the direction of the athletics program. A specified timeline is indicated, i.e., three-year, five-year, or other time period. The survey results are critical to the future direction of the program and oftentimes will be included as goals in the overall document.
  • Alden & Associates compiles the results of the survey and prepares the responses for the athletic administration.
  • The institution's athletic administration reviews the results and begins to work with our consultants to prioritize the information into strategic initiatives and goals.
  • The final document comes complete with mission statement, strategic initiatives and goals, timeline, and assessment chart. Also, a PowerPoint presentation of the strategic plan to share with internal staff, senior administration, campus departments, student-athlete groups/teams, and boosters can be included in the final package.

Over the years, Alden & Associates has witnessed the value of the strategic planning process with our clients and believes such an important document can be a roadmap to the growth and development of your intercollegiate athletics program.

"At Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, we are extremely pleased with the work that Alden & Associates did on our behalf by conducting a very thorough Title IX Audit for our intercollegiate athletic program.  Because we are a rapidly developing athletic program in a very progressive, growing university, the process of self-examination that our audit provided was critical, and it led to the formation of a well-conceived action plan that will ensure and protect our program’s comprehensive commitment to gender equity.  Our consultant’s background as a seasoned, experienced intercollegiate athletic administrator, proved to be a major asset as well – because he intuitively understood not only the issues that we were facing, but also the need to reach practical, attainable solutions.  Our work with Alden & Associates is helping us every day to provide a solid administrative foundation for our total athletic program."

"It was a pleasure working with Alden & Associates on the formulation of a policies and procedures manual. While this task was especially daunting for UNH given the fact that we did not have a previous document, Betsy Alden's expertise carried the day. UNH not only received a well done "living document" but learned much along the way. We are currently contemplating a strategic plan for our department and will utilize Alden & Associates if that is the direction we plan on pursuing."

Drake University

"In the fall of 2000, a campus committee recommended that Drake University conduct a study of the potential impact of eliminating the University's Division I-AA football program. Needless to say, the outcome of that study would have serious consequences for the University's finances, admissions profile, gender balance and racial diversity concerns, and Drake's relationships with its alumni and the community--all of which would be subjected to sustained and vigorous public scrutiny. Alden & Associates and Betsy Alden in particular, were of great help to Drake University in addressing this highly volatile issue--providing objective data on which to base decisions, and an articulate, thoughtful, and immensely helpful analysis of those data to assist the University's administration formulating a response. Throughout the process, Betsy was an informed, engaged, and extremely perceptive partner, and the University's ability to effectively communicate the appropriateness of its decision (we did not eliminate the football program) was in great part due to her collaboration with us."

The proposals that it helped to shape are practical and achievable, and the firm earned and held the confidence of Board members and campus administrators alike.”
